A New Year Begins - - -
The start of a new year offers a
new beginning and an exciting opportunity to create
your future. Yet many, if not most dentists, struggle
with this vital undertaking.
When you take time to reflect on
the events of the past year and extract learning
from both the good and the bad, you are then empowered
to more effectively plan for the new year. As
you build your plan you develop clarity that will
support you to more easily make both simple and
life-transforming decisions. These good choices
move you closer to living the life of your dreams.
Personal leadership is key in this
process. Your goals should be in alignment
with your values. The more closely
who you are is aligned with what you do, the deeper
will be your passion and commitment,
and the more gratifying your results will be.
Remember to create goals in all
areas of your life to enhance your life
balance. Also consider the legacy
you wish to leave behind.
Setting Goals
When setting goals: explore opportunities, stimulate
new ideas, create new energy, build (and feed)
an insatiable appetite for learning, consider
new commitments, enhance relationships, refine
systems, develop key strategies and optimize results.
Also, compile a ‘stop doing’ list;
get rid of things that aren’t beneficial.
Setting goals is one of the most
important things you can do to guarantee your
personal, professional and financial success.
Whatever you focus on consistently,
you will create, whether it is good or bad.
Writing Goals
As you write your goals, be highly specific and
descriptive. Create an image that engages your
emotions and generates a vibrant energy that is
unstoppable. Write your goals in the present tense,
as if you have already accomplished them.
Goals Worksheet
Click on this
link, for the document, Review
of 2003 and Goals for 2004. As you
answer the questions in this document, you will
be encouraged to reflect on the last 12 months.
This is incredibly valuable information to help
you determine your goals and objectives for the
upcoming year.
In working on the above project,
write out everything you can think of. Spend a
few days creating your lists and keep adding to
them as you think of more. Develop a clear strategy
for how you are going to make your goals reality.
Spend at least twice as long building your strategy
as you spent coming up with your goals.
Performance Review
Your goals and strategic plan should be treated
as a ‘living document’ that grows
and changes with you. Each day, or at least once
each week, review your top 3 personal and your
top 3 professional goals and make sure you are
on track for making them happen. At the end of
each month, review and evaluate the progress you
have made. As you evaluate the past month, make
necessary adjustments to your strategy, and refine
your plans and goals for the upcoming month.
Finally, don’t allow yourself
to fall into the ‘success trap’. This
is what happens when we become 'too busy'. When
we are perpetually 'too busy', we race through
life without allowing ourselves the chance to
learn new things or to recognize and be grateful
for that which we already have.
When you take the time to plan,
you have the opportunity to live with abundance
and develop a Practice that has an unmatched competitive
advantage. Hopefully the ideas presented in this
newsletter will help you make 2004 a banner year.
