Writing Your Script for 2007
As 2007 winds down, I invite you to reflect on all the blessings you have experienced over the past year. By reviewing the past, you will be in a stronger position to create the future of your dreams.
To help you with this project, click here for the document, Review of 2007 and Goals for 2008. This tool will help you sort your thoughts and determine where you want to focus your energy in the new year.
As you set your goals and objectives, consider using the SMART System. George T. Doran is quoted on the internet as the originator of this concept, through his article in Management Review in November, 1981.
The SMART System
The acronym SMART stands for setting goals that are specific, measurable, ambitious, relevant and timely.
Specific. Setting specific goals increases the likelihood you will achieve them.
Measurable. Establish concrete criteria to measure your progress for each goal. Measuring your goals will help you stay on track and reach your target dates.
Ambitious. Set stretch goals. You can attain almost any goal you set when you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps in a strategic manner.
Relevant. To be relevant, a goal must represent an objective you are excited about and are willing to do whatever it takes.
Timely. A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there's no sense of urgency. Set a date—Month/Day/Year—for when each task is to be started and completed
Reviewing Your Goals
Once you’ve set your goals and created an action plan for 2008, review and update it on a regular basis. By reviewing it a minimum of once per month, you are far more likely to achieve your goals. Researach indicates that 80% of people will have forgotten or given up on their goals within six months. If you stay committed and follow your action plan, you will attain your goals!
Have fun as you review 2007 and make plans for the New Year… you’ll be glad you did!

Points to Ponder:
- What will you do in 2008 to ensure you are the dentist of choice – both for your team members and for your patients?
- Do your goals meet the criteria for the SMART system?
- Do you have a sense of urgency to complete your top three personal and professional goals?
Wishing you a magical holiday season and the best in 2008!
